I will look for it when I get home. On another note, the existing trans gives a very inaccurate speed to the dash. Could that be a bad VSS?

Could be. If anyone made changes to the driveline over the years though.... and didn't compensate for them.... that might be the problem too.

I'm an *** sorry for wasting everyone's time. I could have sworn my other truck was a '97. But after following some advice and looking at the casting stamp it could not have been.
Crazy thing is I've been sitting on this trans for years waiting on a problem with my '96. So I have a '98ish rebuilt trans for sale if anyone is interested.

I would like to explore why my speedo is off. Can I adjust the VSS or does it need to be replaced?

On the 96, VSS is gear driven. Need to see what size tires you have, and what gear ratio you have in the diffs, then there is a cool chart to tell you what color driven gear you need, to have your speedo be accurate.

well the tires are 275/70R17 how would I confirm the gear ratio?
