my truck has mad a funny small rattle, shaking sound for awhile, when you give it a little gas, like in a drive through or pulling into garage, it just makes a undescribable sound. not a big rattle or grind , but a subtle little growl, i had a friend tell me it sounded like maybe a converter. he moved the thing and it did sound like the metal sound shaking i had been hearing, ok, i know nothing and he left for new york.. does this sound right to anyone ? i know less than nothing and get dumber every day, lol it runs fine just that little sound when you give it gas sometimes.. thanks
It is possible for the internals on a catalytic converter to come loose and rattle around. If that`s the case, you need to replace the catalytic converter. I have personally had the baffles in a muffler break loose and rattle before, and I had to have the muffler replaced.
thanks ram driver, you guys always get me in the right direction. i dont even know, does a muffler shop replaice converters ? or a regular mechanic, or both. lol
^Yep. Just go in and say you have a rattle in the exhaust, then they will be able to find the problem before replacing parts. Could be something else, but if you go in and say "change my cat" and the rattle is still there, you'll have no recourse. If they pinpoint it to the cat, you can be confident if the noise remains after replacing it they will take care of it for you.
Chrysler had a recall on the some years for the cats breaking up.(mine did, 1996). Might want to check and see if yours is covered. They will replace it free. I opted for a high flow cat(magnaflow) so just replaced mine. Here is was i found inside...
wow , you guys are super helpful. i hope that is the sound, still not sure, but the breaks are all good and it sounds like a rattling, so, who knows. i know less than nothing about cars, i get many good suggestions here. something about an idler pulley starting to make a sound, so said he, lol,, uggg, always something i guess.. thanks so much everyone
