Default Performance heads?

What is the best deal going for performance heads for the Magnum, both in aluminum and cast?

I see Hughes has some iron heads for LA blocks that can be dual drilled for Magnum blocks. They say they flow well. I also want a little higher compression.

Thanks for any info!

Paul

if you are not doing a camshaft, get the edelbrock heads. The smaller combustion chambers will get you better power than their "Iron Rams." Even hughes will tell you to get the edelbrocks if you aren'd doing a camshaft.

Make sure you have no blow by before going with a higher compression head.

Downside to edelbrock heads...you need to get the adjustable roller rockers (ala chevy). Bolt on Harland sharps won't work (so I;m told).

Good info. I was planning on a mild cam also.

The engine (5.9) has around 25k miles on it since a rebuild to .030 over. I want to add some power in it since I'll be racing it. Most run LS engine pumping out 400-500 hp. I just need more than stock...

For my info:

Stock is 63 cc chambers.
Hughes Iron Ram has 62c.
Edelbrock has 58cc.

I would go with the Irons and the mild cam from what you stated. Might need to upgrade the injectors though. fuelinjectorconnection is a good website for what you may need (24 lb blue devils for your year).

Whatever you do, don't get the old style 24# injectors like I got. I had to swap the connectors and you need to make sure that your injector matches the resistance of your stock injector. otherwise what it gets from the computer may not translate to what SHOULD be going into the engine.

And get an AFR gauge.

I think what you want is listed here:

You can email the guy from KRC (they are not in business anymore) and get the cam specs.

I wanted to do this for the past 8 years, but its just a pipe dream. I'll break something.

The engine in my Jeep is actually a 97, with 97 harness, and 98 PCM. Are you talking about the newer style injectors with the red connector? I think those started in 00?

I'm wondering if I'd be better off bang for the buck doing a 408 also with the heads? It's either that or buy a crate LS3.

yeah, 2000 had the oval connectors and earlier has the square connectors. The blue style for dodges (taller and skinny) of the generation 3s is what you want for a cam/head combo.

I think you can still tune a 98 with a SCT. If not, you can get the MOPAR PCM and throw 24# injectors on it and have a good AFR ratio.

Most people on this forum have problems doing a 408. Also, I donlt know too many people who race magnums!!!

Yes, you can tune a 1998 with an SCT. My 1997 has been tuned with an SCT. I believe OBDII started in 1996 on these trucks, so you should be able to tune a 1996 also.
