Default 46RE Rebuild - Update

.
Okay, here's the latest chapter in our tranny saga...

We went to Aamco, being a national chain. Since we wanted a shift kit installed, they preferred to do a rebuild versus a reman. Our initial quote before teardown was $2002. Providing no hard parts were damaged. Well, I just came from there after viewing everything now that the tranny is in a pile on the rebuilder's workbench. Here's where things get ugly...

The following parts have friction type wear to them, where shavings have been ground off, and reaked havoc on machined surfaces:

Pump
Planetarys
Ring Gear
Reverse drum
Support
OD Housing Piston
Backing Plate

So, now with these parts having damage to them, our price has now jumped to $3023.50 w/ tax. Ouch! Could have gotten a Reman for cheaper. Anyway, we're trying to decide what course to take, but with our truck on the lift, and it's tranny in a pile, not sure we have much choice. And here, we thought we would be fine since it just had a slight slip between 2nd and 3rd.

They are installing a medium strength TransGo shift kit, and the price will include a 3yr/36 mile warranty.

I'll post up pics of the parts shortly.

Here's the pics of the internal 'hard parts' that they say need replacement. You can see the wear marks where they met and metal shavings had worked in between causing the machined surfaces to get chewed...

I guess only another tranny shop could tell us whether we're being 'hosed' or not.

I still say go with an APS tranny... www.apsprecision.com

edit: call them and see how long to get one to you and how much for a "mild" one (cheepest with the right fixes)

Ouch! When I blew up my 727 it only cost me $1500 to get both the tranny and tcase rebuilt with the latest updates and HD parts, iirc. That's insane!

If you decide to go with rebuilding you own make sure the planetary that is installed is the 5 pinion type. I have this in mine as well as a transgo shift kit and sonnax pressure regulator valve and mannual valve. These allow fluid to be pumped through the cooler and lube circuts at all times and in all shifter positions. This also helps stop the converter drain back issure with these tranys.

on my 1995 model, after its 3rd transmission failure, I took it to who i like to call my hero. No other tranny in the truck lasted more than 30,000 miles. He put a mild shift kit in it, a 24,000 lb gross transmission cooler, bipassed the check valve in the coolant lines (the reason the 3rd one died was bc the check valve didnt open). The transmission has gone 100,000 + and still going. He charged $1400 for pulling it, rebuilding it, putting it back in. Can't beat that with a stick.

I have had very bad experiences with AAMCO. Including action by the Attorney General's office. They can get a new tranny or performance aftermarket trans for less than $3k. I won't get into detail, but I bought perf. aftermarket internals and asked AAMCO to do the work. They kept the perf. parts and installed Chinese/ cheap aftermarket parts and ended up destroying the trans as it was not put together correctly. When I found out what they did I called HQ in PA and got the Att. Gen. office , involved. BTW... AAMCO = All Automatic Must Come Out. I will never use them again for anything.

My GOD.....that scares the absolute crap out of me. I looked at going to Aamco and a couple of other Trans shops. The lowest quote I got to do anything with mine, rebuild or put a reman in was 2600. So I decided that I'm going to do it myself. I have some help and a good shop to use but it still looks intimidating as hell.

While we are on the topic, does anyone have a service manual for a 46/47RE? I'm going to have to track one down before I begin this task next month.
