I bought a Gray Tools P503 when I did my install
The HF one should be more than adequate to do the job and I would have bought it if I lived in the states, $30 is a steal. Splitter won't work for the carrier bearings, you will need to cut off.
You may want to give this a try, Get a chisel and grind a nice point on it so it will get between the bearing and gear. Put the gear on a solid wood surface and see if you can separate it. Sometimes this works and other times it don't but worth a shot. If it moves the bearing you then can get a gear puller on it and pull it off.
That sucks the larger one doesn't come in that kit, if I bought that single large splitter would that work without all that other jazz? How would I go about using the old bearing to set up the shims? Would sand paper be enough shave a little off the inner race?
"That other jazz" is the puller. You can fab a puller, use a 2/3 jaw, a press or a few blocks of wood to hold the splitter and pound out the pinion gear. Use a brake hone to make setup bearings.
Would I be able to put that separator on top of the bearing and use a press to press it on? I would be skeptical of putting the press on the pinion gear, I saw somebody do it on a Chevy site though
Also, theoretically could I put the same amount of shims that come off and put the same amount on and achieve the correct pinion depth? I don't have the tools to make a set up bearing, and my guess is that puller will ruin the bearing if I need to take it off again. What did you guys use to hold the yoke in place? Torque for the pinion nut is 210?
