The "v8" mark is like 17 deg past TDC mark, it is hard to see. I think the lines go as far as 11 or something, so its a little past the last of the marks. Hope this gives you a better idea where to look if its still there...

This mark is for valve, rocker installation, not distributor.
The book is written poorly, but all crank/cam stuff is 0 TDC comp, oil drive to 1 bolt, and cyl 1 marks in dist and 1 on cap.
Again, V8 and such marks are for rocker bolt down.
