engine overhaul...or replace ?

Costs are very similar, depending on where you get your replacement engine from. There is some labor overlap, in that no matter which way you go, you still need to pull/replace the engine..... If you are planning on doing it yourself, you can save a fair amount of money. In that case, it's worth it to pick up a good core from the junkyard, rebuild it, and then just do the swap. That way, you are only without your truck for a day or two, instead of weeks......
Don't bother rebuilding your stock heads. Just replace them with some good, aftermarket heads. They are better castings, and less prone to cracking. Odessa/Clearwater sells 'em for under 600 for a pair.
