Hi, I need help with my 98 dodge ram. It has a 360, v8
It seems to idle rough when engine is warm at random times. It just started to make a sucking noise from the air filter, and the exhaust smelt like rotten eggs.

I replaced the IAC and the TPS in august. The only thing I could think of is if the catalytic converter is plugged or a O2 sensor Is starting to go. Any help would be much appreciated.

 

Rotten egg smell is a dead catalytic converter. The other symptoms are the oxygen sensors -- if you don't get 'em from the dealer, which is the best option in this case, go for Denso or NTK brands, in that order of preference. Bosch will make your truck very unhappy, and the random crap you'll get from some shiny discount chain is sure to be at least as bad.

I would check and clean your IAC too.

 

You might start with just the oxygen sensors, and see if the sulfur smell dissipates afterward. It might. If it doesn't, try another brand of fuel (go with a Top Tier brand, at least for this check) before pulling the trigger on the expensive catalytic converter. Either way, the O2 sensors should clean up the intermittent poor idle/sucking sound and make your engine run better at all other times, too.

 

Alright not trying to jack the thread, but I don't feel like making another missfire thread is needed

My truck has a missfire, since I've changed my pcv valve I have not seen any oil use or smoke
But I have a upstream o2 sensor code
No missfire code, also found out I have a fuel leak but I'm waiting on it to get a little warmer than 28 degreese outside to fix that, do you all think it's the o2 sensor screwing it up? I plan on getting a ngk

When looking down the throttle there's a little oil residue from the bad pcv but no pooling

I also may have a bad harmonic balancer


Previous owner said he did a tune up on the truck (there was a distributor cap and rotor in the bed when I got it so I'm guessing they were done). Plug wires look good, haven't pulled the plugs yet, haven't done compression check yet

 

That's probably most of the problem, if not all of it. In the typical end of life failure mode they cause the engine to run too lean.

 

Hey big fan of your user name, I had it on a bimmer forum lol. So replace the o2 sensor and fix my fuel leak and see what happens before I go digging too far?
