Spec-D headlights? Headlight recommendations?
Following up for that poor schmuck who comes along later and wants to know how the story ended:
The beam pattern improved a lot with the ultra-premium lamps so the filament mask shadows aren't so pronounced and the overall fill is much better. Whether it's the reflectors liking more light or just sloppy filament placement in the lamps that came with the things I don't know. Either way, with the new lamps and a little fiddling with the aiming the high beams are so great an improvement over the stockers that I'll accept the low beam puddle of light BS.
The objectionable waste light above and beside is gone now that I've got some electrical tape on the top horizontal and outboard vertical edges of the lights. I'll be taking the bumper off next month, so while it's out of the way and getting the lights in and out is easier I'll replace the tape with paint and be done with it.
I've always been happy to spend relatively serious money on great lighting, but these ain't it. Fortunately, I paid only $80 for the pair so I'm satisfied enough with them to leave them in place, and maybe buy another pair if these get beat up. I'd never pay the $200 plus up to as much as $280 that I've seen quite a number of vendors asking for the same lights under a variety of brand names, but for $80 they'll do just fine.
I never expected greatness out of 9004 lamps, and for all I know these things are the best street legal lights to be had for our walleyed trucks. I was hoping, though, for a nice beam pattern with no puddle and less waste light. At least the mufkers ain't blue.
