Default Fog Light Mod... On With High Beams

Is there interest in this?

I have a way to mod the fog light relay so that the fogs stay on even with the high beams on. Sorry, I have a '99 with only 1 fog light relay, not the 2 relay version on earlier models. If there is also interest for those, I can look at the FSM, try to figure out a mod for those but I would not be able to test and confirm that it works.

Anyways, I tested it today and it works. If there is interest, I will write it up send post some pic's. Otherwise I will just keep my piehole shut. I should be able to get around to finalizing it in the next week or so.

You guys (and gals) with 2 fog relays have it easier. Pull fog relay #2 and put a jumper between slots where pins 30 and 87A would go. Can someone with the 2 relay setup tell me if you have the regular size cube relay or is it the mini relay.

on my 97 all I had to do was cut one prong off of the relay to get driving with high beams and no jumper wire necessary.. ran my old truck this way for a few years before I traded it in with no issues

bottom of page it gives what needs to be done year by year for 2nd gen trucks

Yep, cutting off the one leg of the relay would do it, the relay is acting as the jumper. Either cutting one or both legs to the coil of the relay will do it. Pins 85 and/or 86.

That method still runs all of the current through the fog light switch to ground. This may be okay if you are running led's with less actual current draw than the stock 37.5 watt bulbs. But like the stock headlights (with all of the current again going through the same switch to ground) eventually it's going to get "warm" and need to be replaced. The way that I did it, I ran a new ground to the relay for the lights. Also, that jumper method removes the "fog" fuse from the circuit (fuse G in the PDC) and relies solely on the park lamps fuse (fuse F in the PDC) to power the fogs and everything that it is supposed to.

So, I went ahead and did this but without pic's (due to lack of interest). What I did was create 2 short jumpers, with a male spade on one end and female spade on the other. If you have the mini relay, you will need to file down the width of one of the male spades to fit in the smaller pin socket (pin 85 or 2). Attach those jumpers as noted. Then, I made 2 longer jumpers, one end with female spades and the other as needed by your hookups. I attached these to the relay and then to ground and battery plus, also as shown. The wire to ground should be at least 16ga, this is the wire carrying the fog light current to ground and not through the light switch. The battery plus wire, I added a fuse to, and can be a smaller gauge because it only carries the volts/current for the relay. The fuse was 1 amp. The short jumpers were also 14ga. The jumpers need to have enough length to them to allow you to lay the fog relay down and out of the way inside the PDC so that you can still close the cover. That's it.

Relay:
86 or 1 > to ground
85 or 2 > to same socket in PDC
30 or 3 > to same socket in PDC
87A or 4 > not used
87 or 5 > to batt positive (fused)
