NONE of this is necessary if you drill a hole in the t-stat! Do it and forget about it. I have had the coolant out of the system plenty of times with not one issue. Only thing is it will take a while to fill it because you have to wail for the air to go past the t-stat(hole) then fill with fluid. Done, Drive it with heat! A lot of t-stats have a small valve(air bleed in pic) to do this but i haven't seen one for the 5.2 5.9's.
This t stat is for a different motor but you get the idea.
