Default 1998 Ram 1500 3:55 4x4 Transmission Cooler

I bought this truck to tow my 4,200LB Streamline trailer. I know the axle ratio isn't the ideal for towing but I got a good deal on the truck.

I'd like to have a local shop add a transmission cooler to it, while they are doing a flush and adjusting the bands.

Truck has 95k miles on it and is in fairly pristine condition. It has a Class 3 receiver and a brake controller on it. I bought it from a dealer who had picked it up at an auction. I suspect it was a retired persons camping truck or something.

I'm handy, but personally I don't work on things like Transmissions or Brakes, I leave those to the pros. Also I have looked around a little bit and it seems like there are a ton of options for transmission cooler. Are there any recommendations/stories you can relate?

Thanks!

-JH

If your truck came with the trailer package it would have an external cooler. Look at the passenger side of the radiator in between it and the ac condenser. That's where it should be if it has one.

Default there is another cooler

There is a cooler centered behind the condensor cooler that looks like it is feeding back to the tranny. It is centererd behind the condensor cooler and fits inside the shroud of it.

The condensor cooler has Mopar label and p/n 55055824aa it seems very large to me.

Large means it can cool better!

Yep, that is an aux trans cooler. Comes with the towing, or heavy duty package. Adding another one would be a waste of money.

Don't do a flush. At 95k miles that's the fastest way to kill your transmission. Just do a drain/refill and have them adjust the bands.

Yeah, you already have a cooler, but that doesn't mean it's still efficient.
I'd install a trans temp gauge and haul that trailer a bit to test the towing temps, normal driving temps, etc.

You should invest in numerically higher gearsets too.
