Default '01 Ram power steering top-up (ATF?) and oil-filter size

For some reason I have a very slow power steering fluid leak in my 2001 Dodge ram (2wd 5.2L). What's the verdict on using ATF+4 as a top-up?

(it has the original PS fluid - the truck only has 37k miles on it).

Also - I've always had the oil changes done by the dealer, but I did it the first time a few days ago. I had a (new) spare filter from one of my old cars (with 318) and it is the tall / long filter. The Ram had a short filter, but the long one fit easily with plenty of clearance to the frame.

Did these trucks come from the factory with the short / stubby filter, and why? I assume it's better to be using the larger (longer) filter - yes?

Sure, you can use ATF for power steering. IIRC, actual power steering fluid is similar but not dyed red. I've mixed them and never had a problem. I believe the Redhead boxes call for ATF.

Filter should be wix 51085. There is a longer version that some use but I've never tried it.

Chrysler has been using the larger style (fram PH8A since the 50's) in both small and big blocks. Sometime in the 90's they started with short filters. To save a buck i assume. Use the large style filters.

The longer Wix is the 51515xp, I go back and forth with those and the Mobil1 m1-301 depending on which is cheaper at the time
