Default Stiff steering to the left at idle

My 1999 1500 has had this issue for a awhile now. It steers easily to the right but steering to the left is very stiff, but only at idle. Once the RPMs are up a little, it will steer right and left with ease. It is stock with no lift kit or modifications. I've jacked it up and looked and don't see any obvious issues. When there is no weight on the front it will steer both ways easily at idle. I've flushed the system without making any difference. Haven't replaced any parts yet, as I was hoping to find some answers before I threw any money at it. Any ideas?

worth a shot.

if it turns ok by hand, front wheels jacked up and engine off....could be a worn spool valve. does it use a steering rack or box? does it seem to correct itself after an hour of driving?

It has a steering box, not a rack. The problem persists, even after driving for awhile. If the pump is providing enough pressure to turn right I would think that problem is somewhere in the steering box, not the pump, but I wanted see if anyone else has had this issue before I start putting money into it.

Only chrysler seems to think we have rack and pinion steering. (Just look at your build sheet.)

You are *probably* correct..... But, don't replace the box with just another one from the parts store, or the junkyard. Some of those are worse than what you are replacing. (for one reason or another) Get a Redhead, or Borgeson box.
