Can an auto trans from a 2001 3.9l V6 2wd swap to a 1997 5.2l 4wd? I realize that the tail shaft would have to swap over to mount the transfer case, but is it possible?


I found a 1997 Ram 4wd V8 on CL, but it has a bad trans. I have a 2001 Ram V6 2wd that it is burnt to a crisp. But the trans is still good.

I can't swap the trans. It looks like the 1997 4wd I was thinking of buying has a 46RE and my 2001 V6 has the 42RE. The 42RE does not have the torque capacity that the 46RE has.


I guess there is really nothing to salvage out of my burned up truck :-(

You would basically have to completely disassemble the trans to change it over in any event. So, it would be a pointless exercise anyway. If the trans is still good, you could always just sell it....
