Default Oil Pan Replacement

I've got a 97 2500 with the 5.9 gas engine and need to change the oil pan. I've purchased a Fel-Pro gasket with the new pan and was wondering if there are any places on either the block or gasket that require sealant. Any help or advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to DF!

Only place I used sealer was in the corners by the rear main bearing. The spots will be obvious if ya look at it.

You did get the good rubber/viton gasket, right?

I agree with hey you, just the corners is all you really need, if your concerned about the gasket moving around while installing the pan it wouldn't hurt to lay a thin bead along the pan sides were the gasket lays..

or, tie it on with some string here and there, and once you have the bolts in, pull the string.

I just did this with a FelPro gasket and it is sturdy and heavy enough to stay on with gravity. Just feed the pan up and in and start a couple bolts. And extra pair of hands helps. Only add a little RTV in the corners at the rear bearing either on the block or the pan. Took me 20min to clean the pan, 1 min to replace it.
