160 amp alternator installed
So, after getting the 390 installed, I noticed a significant voltage drop during idle. I attributed it to the combination of e-fans, headlight wiring upgrade, and additional gauges. My build sheet indicated the truck came with a 117 amp alternator. So I went on a search for a higher amp alternator. The typical swap, pocket book friendly, is to install the 136 factory alternator. I ran a quick down and dirty calculation and determined that 160 would been the minimum I should install. Looking around, 180 amps running around 300 bucks was what I looking at. Then I ran across a thread on one of the Dakota forums indicating the 160 amp from a 2001 Durango is an exact fit. Lo and behold it is. No modification needed and slides right in. This was a much easier expense to swallow at about half the price and readily available at local parts houses if it fails. Just sharing in case anyone else is in the same boat.
