Oooops. 97..... that makes life more interesting. If you want to do it yourself, you will have to build an adapter that goes between the fuel line, and the rail, that has a test port on it....... Otherwise, have to pay someone else to check it. Not sure which way would be cheaper.....

I think I'll just take it to the shop. Have them hook up the scanner and do a fuel pressure test. What psi should it register to be normal?

can an intermittent functioning tachometer without the engine running bad be a sign the crank sensor is going out, or would there be engine symptoms along with it?

Tach gets its cue from the PCM. If the crank sensor is failing, you are more likely to notice the engine running bad first.....

Thanks. I had this happen the other day and want to start ruling things out. I figure its a bad connection in the dash.

No vacuum leaks I'm lost any help would be appreciated.
I know this is a little late but in the end turned out to be the crank shaft position sensor even though it never triggered a cel after replacing hasn't happened since. Thank you all for the help and suggestions.
