Tie Rods
I am in the process of replacing both my outer tir rods and I hit a snag, well the second snag. The first being my puller sipped and ruined the nut, so I had to cut the nut off with a hacksaw.
The second snag being I can't twist the left outer out of the adjuster sleeve, even though the adjuster sleeve bolts are both loose and jiggle. Did I miss something? As I type this two thought popped into my head, I could heat the sleeve and see if that breaks the crud free. Or I could take a wedge (old screwdriver) and wedge it in the slit on the sleeve to try and pop it it free?? Any thoughts?
I left the sleeve with some penetrating oil to soak over night.
Thanks

well the penetrating oil will help. But if you have ever watched someone at an alignment shop. They have a special tool that looks like a funny wrench with a hook on the curved part, it slips around the sleeve and hooks into the slot and you turn it just like any other wrench. You can try a screw driver or small pry bar, but be careful not to spread the sleeve open to far that it wont align right again. I always use a pipe wrench, seems to work well.
Thanks, I thought of something else, the threads may be left hand on one side of the sleeve and right hand on the other. I think I read it somewhere or saw it on a part diagram?
I figured the reverse thread item out. The adjuster sleeve I was fighting with never gave up so I ended up buying a new sleeve and new inner tie rod :-(
Everything went back together with no hitches though, that's always good.
I wanted to wirte a DIY article for doing all this, but my batteries were dead in the camera, and now that everything is done, my camera would have been a greasy mess by now.
