front transmission band adjustment tips
I am changing trans fluid and filter and also plan to adjust bands.
1. the front band adj screw is difficult to work on because of the trans oil
piping and throttle valve components surrounding the screw. many
forum members have commented on the difficulty.
2. following is how I tackled the job. this procedure worked well for me.
a. clean the screw and surrounding area of oil and dirt. (a clean area
is much easier to work on)
b. I DID NOT use a torque wrench. not sure what tool I would need
to fit the square nut on the adj screw.
c. disconnect the spring (easy to do) that is in front of screw
d. there is room behind the obstructions to the top right of the screw
to allow wrenches to attach to the screw and locknut. just play with
it and you will see what I mean.
e. in case I needed to re-position the screw in the original position, I
marked the top side of the adj screw and the trans housing with
whiteout. (you must remember the # of revolutions of the screw as you are turning it)
f. loosen the the lock nut with a 3/4" socket and ratchet. hold adj screw in position with a 5/16" open end wrench and turn lock nut several
turns. (use your fingers and a box 3/4" wrench to turn locknut)
g. tighten adj screw with box wrench (in lieu of a torz wrench, I firmly tightend the adj screw (I did not very, very tighten it)
h. I then loosened adj screw 2 7/8 turns.
I. the trick now is to prevent screw from moving when tightening locknut. I held adj screw in place with box wrench while tightening locknut
with my fingers or box wrench. when finger tight, I used socket on the locknut and very tightened it. (after removing socket, recheck and confirm that the adj screw did not move. if it do, redo the process)
I then took the truck for a test ride to confirm the trans shifted gears properly. it shifted gears as expected. there was not noticeable improvement in gear shifting.
I will now drain oil, replace fifter, adj rear band and complete the job.
sorry, no pictures. I am a technology dinosaur .
I tried to keep the post brief. if you want more detail, just ask
