Default 2001 ram 1500 5.2 trans fluid possible overfill

Hey guys I'm new here and inherited my dads 2001 ram 4x4 with a 5.2 auto recently. I'm trying to fix it up and had the transmission pan dropped and filter / refill. My mechanic changed the governor pressure solenoid and put 6 qts back in. The truck shifts pretty slow and slips if you get on it. It bumps really hard when it shifts to overdrive. The dipstick shows right in the range it should be. It shifts worse now than it did before. Is it possibly overfilled or something else? I was told 4-5 quarts was enough and it is overfull. Does a quart overfull really hurt anything?

If the stick says the level is good, then that isn't the problem Be sure you are check fluid level with engine up to temp, and trans in neutral though. Checking in park will give you an artificially high reading.

Probably should have changed the pressure sensor while he was in there as well, not to mention adjusting the bands.....

Check and make sure the TV cable is adjusted properly. That can have a pretty significant effect on shifting......

Castrol atf+4 with a carquest filter, the solenoid was in stock at my local advance it is a tech smart brand. The truck is shifting better now except when it shifts to OD it shifts really hard.

O/D is just a solenoid. It's either on, or off...... no idea why it would shift that hard.
