Start saving your pennies for a trans rebuild then..... You could drop the pan, and see if there is any evidence of "bad things™" happening.....

You think something in the transmission could be making that grinding noise at highway speeds? Maybe that's also the noise at the standstill when in drive?

That's possible too. It can be REALLY hard to tell where a noise is actually coming from, when you are sitting in the drivers seat....

Hmmm yeah I might pop the diff cover off sometime this week and see how things look in there then my buddy has a transmission shop so I'll see how much it would cost for a full rebuild and new converter. I can remove the trans and all that just need him to rebuild it.

Might wanna consider some upgrades while you are in there..... rumor has it, the 47RE parts will fit nicely inside the case, and are MUCH stronger. Chat with your trans guy about it. See what he recommends. (that is within budget. )
