transmission slipping
hello to all. I have a 1999 ram 1500 4x4 5.9L. not sure what trans is in it. here the past several times that I have drove it, it seems like it is taking forever or higher rpms to shift into second gear. ( I don't drive it that much for the record) Sometimes it will hang around 3000rpms before it will shift and sometimes it seems like I have to get on it in order for it to shift. from a sit still if I do get on it, it seems to shift fine and smoothly but it will also downshift hard if I'm slowing down. its a used transmission that I put in it about 5 years ago and like I said I don't drive it much. on a side note I didn't even need the transmission changed out in the first place. I had someone look at a long time ago and he was supposed to be the best within 100 miles of me. he was going to charge me like $1800 just to take it apart and change something inside the trans. so I got a used one with pretty low miles on it for $1200 and myself and some buddies swapped it out. it was still doing the same thing so I took it somewhere else and it ended up being a clogged catalytic converter. back to the issue at hand. it is just taking forever to shift into second and downshifts hard sometimes. riding at high rpms for several seconds before I have to almost floor it to shift. so I do believe it is starting to go out. I'm not really sure how much money I want to put into it because it does also need some engine work. but even though I don't drive it that much (more in the summer) I still need a truck. prob the only thing and prob the cheapest thing that I could do right now is change the fluid and filter. what are some thoughts or suggestions that everyone may have. thanks in advance for any input that you may have. if you need any more info please let me know and I will try and check this site as much as I can. thanks
On the drivers side of the trans, about halfway back, there is an 8 pin connector. Disconnect that, (engine off), then, go for a drive. Keep in mind, there will be ZERO automatic function. The trans will stay in the gear you put it in. (or, at least, it should...) So, start out in first, shift to second, and third, as needed. You will have to downshift at the appropriate times as well. If the trans shifts good, when you tell it to, then it's just an electronic problem, and you can solve it for under 200 bucks. (just replace the governor pressure sensor, and solenoid, change fluid and filter, and adjust bands while you are in there.) if it still does odd and strange things, trans is on its way out.
