i agree,,, a truck is a truck although you can do alot of work to maximize the potential...it will always be a truck untill you spend thousands apon thousands to beable to scream the 1/4 .. but then its no longer a truck....its a hotrod... i was always tought that you really never BOLT on HP... you add or modify eqiup. and parts to release the HP that the motor is able to make but is being restricted.

Yes, being a mechanical engineer I know how they think. You have to give us some credit. The engineers make the best of what they have within governmental regulations. Millions of dollars is spent on design of exhausts, intakes, heads, etc. There are no magical bolt ons that do as they advertise which is make any significant increase hp and mpg. You always have to give something to get something. For hp, you have to give fuel mileage. When you get too much hp you give up the ability to drive it on the street easy. For instance, the 1995 cbr 900 RR sportbike i have that is for sale. Its got head work, mid range cams, flat slide carbs, full racing exhaust, regeared lower thank god...... this bike will haul a$$, but it jerks and sputters and spits when going through town at 35mph even in 2nd gear. There are certain choke points in an engine. 4 really. spark, fuel, air, exhaust. You can free up one or two ponies with aftermarket exhaust, but if the exhaust ports arent big enough, bigger tail pipes are overkill. You can reprogram the ecu but then your injectors become the choke point. With carburetion, if you put too big of a carburetor, your air intake becomes the choke point. If you increase your air flow through a different filter, it might free up that 1 hp you were losing, but your intake ports and valves become your choke point. You can port the heads and put a bigger cam, but then you might have to run octane booster due to a higher compression ratio, so then your fuel is your choke point. So for serious hp, think a step or two past the bolt on modifications. It'd be nice to know for a change that your exhaust pipe or your air filter was really your big choke point wouldnt it? When that is the case, you know you've got some serious power.

seems like an endless train of restrictiveness.. i know what you mean about too much hp. i detailed at a dealership back in highschool that sponsered a stock car team and during the offseason they would park the car in the showroom...and being the detail guy i was always having to rearrange the floor .. so every now and then id have to start upa nd drive the stock car around the parking lot..detail it .. gas it up and park it in a diff. location.. and that thing isnt happy unless its in the trip digits on the speedo.. obviously its a friggen race car but i know what you mean... pointless tohave a 700HP grocerygetter but again... for some reason.. we always find it fun ..
