Default Tranny ?s from a new guy

I've been reading on it and it seams the more I read the more confused I get.
I got a good deal on a 2nd gen 02 because it had tranny problems. Until I get it looked at from what I understand and by how it's acting I've got a 50/50 chance on electronics or the thing is junk. I've planed for the worst with the price I payed.
I understand the 46re changed in regards to the electronic controls so when I look around for a used tranny what year trannys will play nice with my truck. I have a 318 motor.
I understand that the weighted torque converter from the 360 motor wont work for the 318. It's the electronics that seem to be the PITA for fitment.
Thanks,Angelo.

I would guess that any 46RE trans, set up for however many drive wheels your truck has, out of a 2000, or newer truck would bolt right in, hook right up, and just work. 99 and older transmissions would need the governor pressure sensor/solenoid changed, along with the retaining clip for the solenoid. (or sensor, don't remember which, maybe both...) 95 and older simply will not work.

Thanks man, I should have included that info, it's 4WD.
Ok so now I'm wondering if the ecu from the donor truck if it's 96-99 could be swapped into my truck to make that year tranny work?

It's MUCH easier to just change the electronics in the trans..... 96-97 PCM won't work at all, as too much changed in the way dodge did things..... Not to mention the PCM would need to be flashed to the correct vin, or the air bags, and ABS simply would not work at all. (and the lights would be on....) Mix and matching PCM's from year to year would probably be a LOT more hassle than it was really worth. Besides, the governor stuff can be had for less than 100 bucks. (or, right in that neighborhood) You won't find a PCM for that little cash.

Ok, I've got it NO computer swap. 96-99 I change the electronics, 2000-2002 plug and play.
I've found conflicting info on the converter/flex plate. I understand that the 5.9 is an externally balanced motor as opposed to the 5.2. In regards to the tranny swap, is it the torque converter or the flex plate that's balanced on the 5.9? I would think it's the flex plate and that the one on my 5.2 would bolt to a converter from a 5.9.
Also in trying to cover the bases, if the donor trans comes from a 2500/3500 4x4 with ether the 5.2/5.9 motor in the same year ranges as above would the fitment be the same.
Thanks again for all the very helpful info, Ang.

Same trans behind v-8s in the heavier trucks.

In 96, Dodge started putting the balance weights on the flex plate. (as opposed to the torque converter.....) So, flex plates are NOT interchangeable between 5.2 and 5.9. I don't *think* there are any differences in the torque converters, but, that would certainly be something to check before installation.
