Default transmission ?

Hello, I have a 96 ram 1500 4x4 with the 46re trans. I lost OD and I am going to replace transmission. I have a 46re from a 2001 ram 1500 4x4 sitting in my garage. I plan to rebuild it and put it in my 96. So I need to know if all I need to do is replace solenoids and sensors on the valve body for it to work in my truck. Or is there something else?

I'm just using the 2001 transmission to eliminate downtime, truck is my daily driver.

I know this has been gone over many times but I just want to get a definitive answer.

Need the electronics out of the 96, including the retainer for the governor stuff, to put in the 01 trans. Your VSS is on the output of the t-case, so, that's not really an issue. Aside from that, pretty sure it will work just fine.

Since O/D has already gone, that trans probably doesn't have a lot of life left in it......

Welcome to DF!

Yes while your in there just put all new mopar or borg warner solenoids and sensors. Also make sure you install, the correct neutral safety switch. I would also install a new torque converter while at it.

Thanks for the quick responses.

I am ordering borg warner upgrade kit with the harness for a 96 truck. That should take care of the electronics part. Torque converter I'm getting locally after I finish the trans rebuild.

Thanks again!

B&M makes a good deep pan with a drain. I have had bad luck with the derale pans leaking around the drain plug. The mating/sealing surface left, after the bung is welded in (at the factory), is paper-thin.

TCI deep aluminum pans TCI 128015 or TCI 128005 have 4 and 2 quart extra capacity respectively when used with 2nd gen transmissions.

so I got the trans apart except for the OD unit. I cant get the access cover off to get to the snap ring. Is there any special way to get those two torx screws out. I broke two bits already, they arent stripped.

You need a press for part of that exercise, there is a mondo spring in there, that will literally shoot parts thru the wall if you simply release it.

Hit the screws with some chemical penetrant, and tap on 'em with a hammer a couple times, then try and break them loose.

If that doesn't work, and if you have a propane touch, heat em up a bit, and try. Not too hot, jut hot enough. If just heat doesn't work, heat em up, and then spray water on the nots and try. It's just flashing it. It helps to certain out stuck bolts real well. Works good with stuck bleeders in calipers.

Also, invest in an impact torx bit. Lot stronger.
