1998 dodge RAM 1500 5.2
Hello, new user here. Just got a 98 ram on trade.. runs good 182xxx. I'm having a problem with the heat. Once it warms up to running temp the air is "warm" engines hot, hoses hot. Has NEW: radiator, water pump, heater core, and thermostat. What else could it possibly be? I see that this is a common issue for these. Any help is much appreciated!
Yep. Common issue. You likely still have air trapped in the heater core. Best bet is to pull the hose where it's convenient, and back flush it a bit. Then try and leave as much fluid in there as possible when you re-connect the hoses.
awesome! Thanks, do I just detach them running? Non running? And try to get as much air out it possible? Which one tho? Isnt one sending and the other coming back to the engine
The inlet hose runs along the passenger side valve cover. About in the middle, there is a 'splice' in the hose, clamp off the other side (engine side) and put that hose up as far as it will go.
Outlet hose runs down the drivers side, and connects to the little steel pipe that goes into the water pump. I disconnected mine at the steel pipe, and then stuffed a small cork in the pipe, to keep the coolant from running out.
Engine off for this exercise.
I used my garden hose to flow water into the outlet pipe, and waited for it to run clear out the other hose. Yeah, it tends to make a bit of a mess.... and you want to be sure to thoroughly dilute any coolant that makes it to the driveway..... It's bad for animals, but, tastes good... so, if you have pets, keep 'em away from it.
I had a friend help hooking the hoses back up. (basically, holding one, while I dealt with the other. I just put my thumb over the end while I got it close, then stuck it in place as quickly as I could. Dramatically improved my heater performance, at least, for a while.... (I have a coolant leak... think it's one of the freeze plugs on the BACK of the motor.......)
