New member here...been a reader for years, but finally joined today. My 96 1500 has had a rattling Cat since the day I bought it 5 years ago. Horrible at idle (I chuckled when I read about turning off truck at drive thru window - I can relate!), but seems to lessen above idle/at cruise. Either that or the exhaust drowns it out. It recently got worse, and I do have emissions testing, so been looking at alternatives. I'm glad to see that the Magnaflow Y-pipe is a popular choice, since that's exactly what I was thinking of doing. Hence my research here.

 

Somewhere, out there, there is supposed to be a magnaflow cat that is a direct fit. Two in, one out. I don't know the number though.

Do you know if it is a weld-on, or can you clamp it on?

 

It includes the downpipes that bolt to the manifolds. For the rear, you can slip-fit, and clamp, or, weld it up.

 

If i recall the drivers side needs to be welded, Other than that it's bolt on.

 

Well it took about 60 minutes and they welded in a net cat, they claimed it was a magnaflow, but who know. Anyway, it looks like a nicer job than I would have done, cost $390. No more rattling when starting up. I wanted to keep old one to cut open, they wanted a deposit, saying government makes them keep old one for x number of days. I could get deposit back, but decided too much of a pain to deal with whatever the heck they were talking about.

 

The government doesn't require a deposit.... They re-sell them to scrappers, for the rare-earth metals in the cat. They can be worth north of 75 bucks......

How is your plenum? And O2 sensors? Don't wanna trash the new cat.

 

Guess I can view it as a core charge.

 

In all reality, you could demand it back, it is, after all, a legal requirement for them to return all parts they replaced. (or, at the very least, allow you to inspect them, for those parts that have a core charge.... alternators, starters, calipers, etc.)
