Question I need help identifying my transmission

Hi,
I have a '97 1500 with the 5.9L V8. The person I bought it from told me that the owner before him put a transmission from a different model year in it, but that's all he knew. The "Check Engine" light has been on since I bought it in 2013. A guy at O'Reilly's hooked his computer up to it and said the light is on because the transmission doesn't match up perfectly, but that it's only a sensor issue. It's always drove fine, but it occasionally upshifts too soon when I'm first taking off, then it will downshift to correct it. Other than that, I've had no problems, but I'm concerned that it will cause premature wear. I can't afford to buy a new transmission right now. Can anyone tell me how to find out what the transmission model is? Iif I can find that out, I'll at least know where to start so I can fix it. Thanks in advance!

I'm guessing that you need the correct sensors for your '97. Trans was probably from a newer truck. Both are 46re, though, just different sensors.

The sensors for 96-99 are all the same in the transmissions except for the neutral safety switch. 2000 and 2001 have a different governor pressure sensor and overdrive/tcc lockup solenoid. If you had a 2000-2001 sensors in your 97 the o/d off light and trans temp light will switch on as soon as the trucks computer goes into closed loop because the 00-01 sensors have different resistance values than the 96-99. You probably just have a faulty sensor.

Well, that's good to know. Thank you. Do you think that's what's causing it to upshift too soon and then downshift?

I'm not sure what the code was. The guy at O'Reilly's didn't say.

No that's controlled by the valve body. The overdrive/tcc solenoid only controls the 3-4 shift. Try adjusting the throttle valve cable at the throttle body, could be too loose.
