Default Death Wobble/Steering Upgrades

I have a 2001 Dodge 1500 4x4 and I just now started having the death wobble from the truck. I am trying to figure out the best route to solve it. The truck has a 2.5 inch leveling kit and 33x10.5x20 street tires. I have redone the ball joints (all four), put new shocks and sway bar bushings and end links, new control arm bushings, and new hubs. All of this was before the wobbling started about a week ago and I have been looking at new steering boxes, steering updrades, and braces but not really sure the best options for me. I read up on DOR "T" style steering but I don't know if that will help or if a new box would help.

I would think you would get the best answer from an alignment shop. A lift can tend to alter the camber. Usually a steering box is the last addition to cure front end issues.

Death wobble is usually the track bar. It goes from the axle, on the passenger side, up to the frame, on the drivers side, to locate the axle side-to-side. The ball-joint on the frame end was a really bad idea..... Check it, see what it looks like.

The track bar is brand new as is most of the other front end parts. From what I have read it could be in the steering being the Y style that our trucks have and it needing to be upgraded to a T style. Also read on putting a good set of dual steering stabilizers on with the new tie rod and drag link.

The dual stabilizers are just a band-aid. Something else is going on that your truck doesn't like. Also, while the Y setup isn't the absolute best, the vast majority of us are running it with no issues.

It's most likely the spacers. Did you replace the control arms with longer ones or adjust the caster for the spacers? There's something about lifting these trucks without changing control arms that they don't like. That's why a lot of 2500s get DW since they are already higher than 1500s but with the same components. I've never had it but when I went to a 3" lift, I got lower control arms from Skyjacker. They didn't seem any longer but must've helped. What tightened up my front end the most was the Thuren track bar and the T steering. But you can't get Thuren anymore and I wouldn't recommend his stuff to anyone (bad service) and the T steering you must get AC Delco only (avoid Moog or anything cheaper) to avoid the tie rod rotation. But these two things made my front end feel like its on rails. Then the Redhead (took two) really tightened the steering wheel. Again, I've never had DW even with bad parts so just throwing out my ideas. It's sort of a crap shoot and you'll have to start somewhere.

The control arms are stock style but with moog bushings. The thing is though the truck has had the leveling kit and all the other mentioned parts on for more than two months with no problems. When I did the level I did all the other stuff with it and was amazed at how well it drove after having it aligned that evening. It was just last week going to class one morning I hit the same spot on the bridge I always do (one of those you know is there but cant miss) and all hell broke loose. Now every little bad spot in the road and it happens. I checked everything over yesterday with the frontend off the ground and all I could tell was my tie rod ends are just a little loose but not like bad. I will probably do them first then go from there. After that I will try a new steering stabilizer because I know its at least two years old. Beyond that I am not really sure.

If the parts are only two months old then that's it. Or the alignment is way off. It should be zero to 1/4" toe with 3-4deg caster.

And that steering brace does nothing for DW nor for steering linkage. It is a bandaid to "help" worn out steering boxes. Well, I had one on my old stock box and it didn't help at all. After getting my Redhead, that was where all my slop was. All I'm running right now is a Redhead and T steering. No shock, no stabilizer, nothing.

While that aftermarket steering stabilizer noted in the link above doesn't do anything for death wobble, I use one in conjunction with my Borgeson steering box to help it last longer, as it seems to help keep deflection of the lower sector shaft down, which should help with the steering box's longevity.

As for the poster's death wobble issue, have you re-checked your wheel balance? Perhaps you hit a pothole and lost a wheel weight?

As for control arms, I use the ones noted in the links below - they have greaseable poly bushings and completely eliminate side-to-side sway.
