Default Royal purple, worth the money?

So when picking oil, i thought it might be a good idea to try royal purple oil this time around. That is, until i saw the price at autozone for it. Is royal purple really worth the extra money over say, mobil 1? Also, i was talking to a diesel mechanic who says that if your vehicle has always been run on conventional, any leaks that are starting to form would be made worse by switching to synthetic, is this true? I bought my 98 with 98K miles and im assuming the previous owner used conventional (there was a jiffy lube sticker in the window so it couldve been used french fry grease, who knows with them guys.)

I used it on my last oil change before I diagnosed the bad plenum gasket so based on that it wasn't worth the money and I'm an idiot haha. I have heard that synthetic will leak more because of the properties of the oil.

It's a good marketing technique.
