Default 99 ram 1500 5.9l v8

Has problems starting. When you try to start it all lights flicker but if u hold key in start position it will finally start after probably 15 to 20 seconds. If you put key in on position for a minute then start it starts normally. Has new battery. Good alternator and new fuel pump. Relay is testing as good. Any ideas?

Swap the starter relay with another, known good relay anyway.

Make sure your battery terminals are clean, and tight.

Might want to take it to the parts store, and have the test the battery, and do a starter draw test as well.

Another guess would be a wire that not connected or smashed somewhere. When you say flickering, what I imagine happening is a wire somewhere making connection poorly and not having a solid connection is causing it to cycle multiple times (makes me think of sparking across).

I also know you said new battery, but on my old buick, when it wouldnt start for a couple second and lights flickered, it was because the battery was old (Would charge over time and eventually start car right away, but had discharging problems).

Two easiest things to check like HeyYou said, would be to take it to a shop and test starter and everything else just to be sure, shouldnt take much time for the peace of mind. And examine for lose wires.

You could also try unplugging the wire on the coil and replugging it and seeing if it starts right up after. I know my truck used to die because it would shake loose or something and then have issues starting, or it would cause it to start longer. (Probably because all the loud rumble and shaking my truck gives off :P ) Just my two cents.

Glad you got it figured out, sorry we didn't guess it haha. The smoking gun for something like that id usually the battery voltage being very high (or low in other cases) when you turn key. My old Buick used to sit at like 15.4V or something crazy when the alternator went bad and started over charging.
