I tried to do a little 4x4 ing in a little mud the other day and i had an incredibly hard time shifting in and out of 4wheel.. I always shifted when rolling forward into 4 high, it feels like somethings binding or grabbing the rod..

 

If you don't use it often, probably wouldn't hurt to crawl under there, and clean/lube the linkage.....
