1996 1500 no spark intermittent
My buddy has a 1996 Ram 1500 5.2 auto 4x4.
It is having a problem about 2/3 of the time.
I can turn the key on, the fuel pump comes on and makes about 48 psi.
I know the pump should shut off after a few seconds.
Sometimes, the pump continues to run...and run. It never shuts off, even though the pressure is pumped up.
When this happens, I get no power to the coil, thus no spark.
Another thing I have noticed, when this "fuel pump runs" situation happens, the Check Engine light never comes on.
I have checked relays, fuses, and grounds. All check out good. I've replaced the fuel pump for an unrelated fuel gauge problem. I have also replaced the crank sensor.
Sometimes, if I "bump" the starter, it will clear the problem and start just fine. But, more often than not, it does no good.
I'm stuck, and could use some help on this one. I'm used to diesels and pre-fuel injection engines.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
