Default ABS issue???

Hello, I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.2L. As I was coming home from work and turned into my driveway, all of a sudden my right rear wheel locked up. It would go in reverse but not forward. I put it on jacks and put it in gear and the wheel moved smoothly in forward and reverse. I took off the drum and the brakes were fine, the drum came off very easy. I did the same to the left rear and it looked good to. I took it off the jacks, put it in drive and the the right rear locked up again....strange...I changed the rear ABS sensor on the differential and both the ABS light and the parking brake light went off. I took it off the jacks and it appeared as if it was going forward just fine for about 10' when all of a sudden the front right wheel locked up....I checked the ABS fuse and it is fine.

Any suggestions? Could it be the front ABS sensor? if so, is it difficult to change?

Welcome to DF!

Going to move this to the second gen ram section for ya.

Do you actually have 4 wheel ABS? Are there sensors on each front wheel?

Might try disabling the system completely, and seeing if the wheels still lock up. I don't think the wheels are independently controlled...... (fronts *might* be, but, not sure. I think there are only two circuits there.....)

Default ABS issue

Hello,

I don't think I have abs for each wheel. I just pulled the 40amp fuse to disconnect the abs system and the front right is still locked and the abs and parking lights came on in the dash. This has me baffled that the problem moved from the right rear to the right front.

Thanks for responding!

How does your fluid look? Rusty fluid or if it has debris in it could gum up the lines.

If the lights are still on, I suspect it is still getting power from somewhere.

If you have RWAL, there will just be a dump valve on the brake line going to the rear.

If you have 4WAL, there will be a motor/controller under the hood, and wires going to the front wheels as well.

Jack up the front of the truck. Step on the brakes HARD a couple times. Check right front, will it turn? (by hand.) No? Crack open the bleeder on the caliper. Does it turn now? If yes, replace the soft brake line. If not, replace the line, AND the caliper.
