To replace a broken dash in my 96 Ram 1500 4x4 I dropped the stewring whell to provide the need room to access screws etc, when i put it back into place after the dash install, it will not shift into gear. The shifter moves through the gears but it doesnt go into gear and will not move??? Thoughts? Thank you!

Do you mean that the indicator does not move or that it actually does not go through the gears?

The indicator is hooked up to the shift with a spring-loaded string.
