Default Transmission swap
I have a 96 ram 5.9l. Will a transmission from a 01 fit and can i just change the sensors to match the plug ins on my 96?

Yup. So long as they are both designed for the same number of drive wheels.

That'll work. Keep in mind, the retainer for the governor pressure solenoid is also different.
