I bought this fuel pump and housing assembly off Rockauto last week and installed it on Sunday: Precise 402P7138M

It looked to be as good or better constructed than the OE pump and housing it replaced. Haven't started it up yet, though.

Stick with delphi, or denso, they are OEM manufacturers. I have had no luck with the off-brand fellers, they don't even last a year before they fail.

I replaced the pump in my 97 ram about 4 years ago with a cheap eBay one. The connector between the pump and harness lasted about 1 year before it melted. Luckily I still had the original one. It clipped in and that pump is still going. My buddy still drives the truck daily and that pump has about 50,000 miles on it.

That being said, if I had to do it again I wouldn't buy another eBay pump. I've had so many issues with cheap eBay electronics that I wouldn't chance something like the fuel pump.

I searched the factory part number and ended up finding a brand new factory assembly for 38$. Look around, you might get lucky.

74fish, You might have a gauge problem. On an older truck, I had the same issue and it was repaired by replacing just the gauge.

How old of a truck? On these 2nd gens the gauge is controlled by the sender which is part of the fuel pump. Typically when the sender starts to go the pump isn't too far behind.

It has 135000 miles on it. After the comments on E bay I'll probably go with Rock Auto and with Delphi, or Denso.
Big Green 360 , I'll check out the Precise 402P7138M. I'm hoping I don't have a gauge problem but I'll find out.
I just changed the clutch and that was a job... i with the transfer case and all. Everything was bigger than a car ... and heavier.
I saw a video on Youtube tipping the bed rather than removing it. Its my work truck so it has a big rack on it. Hope I don't have to remove it. It's on my list....

I think they also used Carter. Why anybody would go on ebay for auto parts is screwy! Sorry but it's 99.9% china made junk. If you do look for name brand stuff that has a history. It's the down fall of ebay in my opinion. You want to look for parts for a old/classic car and get bombarded with this crap you can get at any auto parts store. If you do get something worth while it's a rarity. I don't feel like dropping the tank again in a year two or three just to save a few bucks. I replaced mine with a airtex because i used them before with no issues. Well a year and a half later the sender quit working. I will it replace it with a delphi next time.

Yeah tipping the bed works great as long as the bolts come out and aren't rusted to all hell. That is the approach I used in the past and it does work very well. 6 bolts total, pull the front 4 out completely and loosen the back 2 up all but 2-3 threads. Then you can tip the bed up about a foot and put blocks between the frame and bed. Lots of room to pull the pump!
