If you had $4,000
Idk about you guys but I used to embarrass the 90s early 2000 4.6 mustangs with my stock 2000 grand prix 3.8 and my stock durango used to keep up with the v6 mustangs easily so assuming you had a 2wd regular cab 5.9l like an ss/t 4k could pick up quite a bit of performance. Exhaust, heads, tb, intake, cam, and tune. I would even say a shift kit as well since they are cheap. You would have a light 300+hp truck with plenty of torque. It could hold its own against the cars of its time just not anything newer. However having driven a reg cab 2015 with 3.92 gears and a hemi with 8spd auto that could hold its own against the new ones with a few mods.
To stay on topic there is a lot you can do for $4000 just have to do some research and a lot of DIY. If you had enough fab experience you could potentially do a turbo with better heads on a $4000 budget. There was a guy on youtube putting together a turbo kit he was going to sell for $2500.

Thought about it. I can get a donor block, machine work, and a forged rotating assembly for $2400. Less than $2000 if I use hyper instead.
This.

Seriously kids. Don't drink and drive.
