If you had $4k, what would you do to make your 2nd gen a mustang hunter?

Well first off, no 2nd gen will ever come close to beating a mustang. Unless it's a 90s V6.

So 4k should cover gears front and rear and leave a grand for a tuner, plenum kit, tuneup, fastman, and carwash. So just go that route and drive it normally instead of dreaming of racing cars.

Yeah, I think trying to even keep up with modern day muscle cars, with a 20 year old truck, is pretty much doomed to failure.....

But, just for grins.....
Tuner: about 500.00
1.7 roller rockers: around 400 these days.
shortie headers, and full exhaust: 600.00 or so. (ceramic coated headers....)
Worked over throttle body. around 250? or so???
M1 2bbl intake. around 600, if you can find one.......
EQ monster magnum heads. 1100-1200?
Cam?? That could be fun, would also obviate the need for the 1.7 rockers, but, I would be tempted to go with full rollers anyway.
Spend the rest on gas, or, put it toward rebuilding the trans after you blow it up.

I actually saw a facebook vid of a 2nd gen diesel ram beating out some super decked out racecar in a drag race, it was actually a mustang too now that I think about it.... but I'm sure that cost wayyyy more than 4k to boost that thing up to be that fast lol

edit: found it on youtube

how much would something like that cost to set up? Not sure if I'd ever get one though, I don't know a single thing about working on a diesel and I always see people selling old ones for alot of money, around $10k or more for a 2nd gen. My dad said diesels last alot longer than a gas engine would but are very expensive to fix.

We have members here that are crankin' north of 900 horsepower from their cummins..... of course, that kind of power certainly isn't cheap. Cubic yards of money.

Just buy gas, one will eventually run into you and die.

$4,000 would put a good cam in my truck with a tuner and get my rockers, cab corners and boxsides replaced.

I prefer to let the mustsngs think they're fast. I've walked a handful of them now with my 50 year old car. My truck never would but they always underestimate my GTO. they think just because it's all steel that it is heavy. Car weighs under 3600 lbs with me in it.

Idk about you guys but I used to embarrass the 90s early 2000 4.6 mustangs with my stock 2000 grand prix 3.8 and my stock durango used to keep up with the v6 mustangs easily so assuming you had a 2wd regular cab 5.9l like an ss/t 4k could pick up quite a bit of performance. Exhaust, heads, tb, intake, cam, and tune. I would even say a shift kit as well since they are cheap. You would have a light 300+hp truck with plenty of torque. It could hold its own against the cars of its time just not anything newer. However having driven a reg cab 2015 with 3.92 gears and a hemi with 8spd auto that could hold its own against the new ones with a few mods.
