engine swap
I have a 2001 V-6 auto ram and I want to install a 318 V-8. Will my auto trans bolt up to this and work? I also have a complete wiring harness with computer that came with the V-8 motor. What problems will I face swapping engines? Any help from anyone who has done this would be helpful. TXS-KEN
I think the V-6's came with the 44re?? So, not quite as stout as the normal V-8 trans. (which were considered weak in any event....)
But, the engine should drop right in, bolt right up. You will need to change the PCM and harness, and once you have it running around under its own power, you will need to have the PCM flashed to your VIN, otherwise, the ABS, and SRS will whine. (and not work.)

Thanks, I had the trans rebuilt by a good shop that changed out the tailshaft housing. They said it was a stronger one and I have had no problems in 30,000 miles. It also has a new torque converter that was an upgrade. The 318 was running good when I heard it and it is stock. I'm looking for a little more power 'cause anyone who has a 3.9 will tell you the same thing. They are weak!
I actually have two of these, the other truck is a 5 speed. I added shorty headers, 4 hole injectors, a modified T.B. w/ spacer plate and E-3 plugs. This truck has a new mopar longblock installed and the power is better but not much. It is more fun to drive with the 5 speed. I'm hoping the V-8 does the trick, making it fun to drive. They really need 300-400 H.P.
