DO I really need Mopar lube in Tranny??
I have a 94 ram 1500 and I am wanting to change the tranny (NV3500 5-speed) and transfercase fluid (NP-231). All my research has said I need the purchase the Mopar manual transmission lubricant P/N 4761526 (ONLY) due to the "yellow metal" synro...is this really necessary or can I just use a 80-90w syn gear oil?? Thx greatly for the help

Mopar Manual Transmission Lubricant (PN 4761525) is the ONLY lubricant recommended for the NV3500.

I put amsoil 80-90W oil in my tranny after a complete rebuild. But 1000 miles later, the bearings burnt up and I had to rebuild it all again. You don't want to know how much it costs. DO NOT use gear oil (axle oil) in your transmission. Just my $.02

The guy that I bought my tranny from owns a shop and he told me to use 5w-30 motor oil in it, said that it is the same thing and works just as well. The only reason to buy that mopar stuff is for your money. Before my tranny went out I put 80w-90 synthetic mobil 1 in it, and that stuff cost $10.00 a quart. Plus my tranny is under warrenty still and if it burns up on that motor oil then so be it but that is what he had told me to use and said it works fine. I haven't had any problems with it.

For an automatic, you can run synthetics from Mobil or Amsoil though. I wouldn't run motor oil in it. [>:] That worked for the old 727s and transfer cases that had cast steel housings...but it's not a good idea for the newer transmissions/t-cases with the aluminum housings.

I WOULDNT PUT ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHAT DODGE RECOMENDS!
46RH = ATF +3
46RE = ATF +3 or +4 depending on the year of the truck. If your tranny has ATF +3 than you can upgrade to ATF+4 but you cant go from ATF +4 to +3. JUST an FYI ATF +4 is dealer only oil and costs 16-20 a gallon. ouch!
Manual trannys = Mopar tranny lube
