Default How to Replace the Rear Main Seal

Does anyone have any tips on how to replace the rear main seal on the 360 motors? I've done some searching, but still really have no idea where to go. I've done a few on Honda's where I've had to pull the transmission and then just pop the seal out and hammer a new one in, but it seems like it's totally different on these trucks. I've got to pull the oil pan in the next few days, so I'm thinking it's time to do the rear main seal since I have a slight leak there as well. Do you you have to loosen all of the bearing caps? Anything special to know when putting them back on, How do you get the old seal out? Any tips to putting the new one in without damaging it?

There are videos on youtube and plenty of writeups for this that helped me.

1. drain oil
2. remove filter
3. remove oil pan
4. remove rear cap
5. loosen next cap
6. loosen next cap
7. take something softer than metal and slightly tap the upper seal until it comes around the crank and can be pulled with pliers. Pull in circular motion
8. remove bottom seal from cap
9. oil seal and install upper half wrapping it around crank
10. clean cap thoroughly and use only red gasket maker (the kind that dries in liquid)
11. install lower seal and use sealant only where indicated (see write-ups)
12. torque 3rd cap
13. torque 2nd cap
14. install and torque 3rd cap
15. install oil pan with new gasket and seal where indicated
16. install filter and oil
17. Wait for it to leak again.

Mine was done to a "T" according to all the write-ups. Still leaks like a sieve. So if it isn't bad, I'd just leave it and avoid a head ache.
