You can get scotch brite pads, sanding discs, bristle discs. They are awesome. You can use an electric drill if you don't have a die grinder.
I LOVE those things. Makes cleaning gasket surfaces almost pleasurable. Almost.

I use a brass wire brush for a drill (for the low speed vs a grinder) with the differential wrapped up in tin foil to get the RTV off. I went from 10 minutes of scraping to 30 seconds of wire brushing with the drill when I take my covers off.

After changing mine a few times I got lazy and picked up a $7 drill pump along with some clear tubing and now I drain mine without taking the covers off.
