I have obd1 fuel injection in my '86 Jeep CJ and use an Actron reader that I bought from Actron years ago. Otherwise, I can use a paper clip to connect two of the terminals in the plug that is used for the emissions inspection. With the key in the on position, I can determine if there are any codes being sent by reading blinking check engine light flashes. You should be able to find out how to read codes from a repair manual for your truck.

I use an older Snap On MT2500 scanner with the appropriate cartridge and connector. You can usually find good used units on craigslist or eBay.
