True, but once you're that far, might as well do the t-chain which is supposed to be the BEST MOD EVER! Didn't do anything for my truck.

Anyway, new waterpump, hoses, t-stat and if 5.9, replace the balancer. If 5.2, you're SOL. I also took the opportunity to flush the core using the heater hoses. Distributer cap is so easy you can do that anytime. Also clean the overflow tank, chain cover and all surfaces well before installing. Replace coolant.

It's a heckuva job, and I was able to do it with my Dad two summers ago. My front seal leaks worse than before. But I can't replace the balancer (5.2). If you have questions or concerns, just post 'em up! You'll need a good puller or two, seal puller, seal installer, lots of wrenches/sockets, and a slinky frame to snake into the engine bay.

I will post when I do the swap, probably late summer. As the e fans I bought a two factory ones off of a truck and when I was tiring a trailer they died (they were brand new)

Already did distributor, plugs, wires, and rotor so I'm not worried about that. That's what I figured might as well do the chain. Why replace the balancer? I have the 360 but why can't you find a balancer for a 318?

Reason to replace it because you've already removed it and the rubber can wear out. Some have had to replace it when it goes bad, which it can do.

No idea. Auto parts store don't stock it. Found out the hard way when I did my chain job. Stupid napa dorks sold me a new balancer for my "5.2" and while I wondered why it looked different, we installed it anyway. Finished the whole job, started it up, and it had a bad vibe. Figured I screwed up the chain. Couple days later, I figured it might be the new balancer was bad. Went to Autozone and asked if they had one and they said it isn't available and if napa sold me one, it was for the 5.9. Sure enough, put the old back on, back to no vibe. All napa said was, "I guess we don't carry one for 5.2. Sorry." I was pissed. Added two days to the job and way more busted knuckles. Oh well. I see rock auto has them though so I suppose "SOL" was a bit dramatic. It's been a long week.

The 5.2L is internally balanced, so there is no external balancer. It's just the crank pulley.

The 5.9L is externally balanced which is why you see balancers for sale for it.

While it may not play a role in engine balance, its still (mistakenly) called a balancer... In reality, its a harmonic dampener.... as is the one on the 5.9... the one on the 5.9 just plays an additional role.

It does have a weight on it and rubber bushing between the rings. It does something more than just be a pulley. Otherwise, the pulley would be all it is. Not a pulley bolted to a very heavy "balancer" wheel. It's the 5.9 that looks just like a pulley to me with the open spokes. Who knows. Point is, it sucks removing and pressing them on whichever you have so might as well do it once!
