Default Odd noise, no one can figure out

I have a 2000 ram 1500, auto tranny, 5.9 94000 miles and I am hearing a noise coming from the front-engine or dash area all the time, louder when cold. The best i can describe it is sounding like a constant whoo whoo whoo (almost like a dog bark in the distance). I have had MANY people listen to it, local mech. dodge service managers, friends etc. no clue. Here is the odd part, it makes the noise at any temp. at any speed, hitting bumps seem to make it louder, I hear it in gear, out of gear or in neutral. I hear it rolling with the engine running or not. I don’t seem to feel any vibrations with this noise. It can be VERY loud in the cab but i can hardly hear it outside or under it. It does not get any faster or louder when i accelerate. The part that really gets me is it does it with the engine off...but vehicle rolling. Any ideas?

Joe

This is a total WAG (Wild A$$ Guess), but you said it makes the noise with engine off, but rolling forward, right? Was the key in the ON position? The only thing that comes to mind off hand would be Blower Motor. I've heard many different noises come from those. If it isn't that, I'm curious to see what else others come up with. Mondo Weirdo Probleeeeemo.

I havent heard of that before, but my blower motor does make a clicking sound when I turn the A/C on. So maybe it is your blower motor cause I know they make weird sounds.

Is your truck an extended cab? I bought my 01 1500 quad cab 5.9 74K miles about a month ago. I too have a strange sound, but it is in the cab. I can hear it intermittantly at idle or when I'm driving. It is a whoo whoo sound, but not like a dog barking. I am pretty sure I have found it though. With the drivers (or passengers) door open and the extended door closed push in and out against the bottom portion of the door. Thats where my squeak is. I am goin go to look and see how I need to adjust it to make it stop. Not sure if this is the same as yours, but maybe it will help.

Let us know what you find.

Im pretty sure its not the doors only because its coming from the front and i can kinda hear it a little, underneath up front. As far as the blower i had everything off when i rolled it down the hill without the engine running. its really hard to discribe a noise in text. Maybe its not like a dog bark in the distance maybe more like a low chirp.

Well, there are several other things I can think of but even I'm dubious about them being the cause. 1. U-joints 2. Steering Knuckle shaft joints? 3. Bushings in the front suspension. Upper and Lower arm bushings.

Other than those, I'm at a total loss. Now I'm really curious to know what is causing it.

it could also be the radio antenna whistling in wind or somthing about the grill that catchs wind just right and makes a whistle. On my dads ram his antenna did make a noise like that. Do you have a roof mounted antenna or something like that? try taking off your radio antenna and driving around to see if thats what made the noise.

I was thinking wind but I can hear the noise in my garage as well as the parking garage. Im, for some reason, thinking tranny, dunno why really but even when the engine is off with the truck is moving I think there are tranny parts moving still?

Forgot one more thing, I just got this truck but test drove many, this is not the only dodge truck that made this noise. I tested one that was a 2001, pretty much the same except it was a sport and the noise was louder...

it makes the noise when its moving? maybe you gotta a rock stuck in the tire... i know it may sound stupid but it cost my dad 300 bux and 2 weeks at the stealership to figure that one out...that would make sense why you here it when you push the truck with the engine off.. Sebesta... the clicking you hear is your AC pump kicking on and off.. .not your blower motor...
