My truck has 175,687 miles on it and im hesitant to do any mods knowing how old the motor is. I already have exhaust but im not so sure about a chip or anything eles. I would hate for me to spend all that money and it take a dump on me. What should I do?
You didnt mention which V8 you had however if your like me and have the 5.2.. summit and all the other parts houses sell a 360 Magnum short block for about $1400. It says its made for stock applications so im planning on replacing it with the 360. I got 112,000 miles on my 318.
if you plan on keeping your truck then mod it and when you need to swap motors, swap all of the upgrades... I have 160K on mine and it still runs awesome (except for the ping) and it's heavily modded...
i plan on doing what steve00 was thinkin about doing.. either getting a new block or pulling a decent motor out of a junker at the yard and slowley building it up with the internal upgrade parts and then bolting on the mods i got now like the cai and the headers ... so whenever my motor does take a dump on me i got one ready to go in and it wont break the bank since ill build it slowley... either i blow the motor or around 150 thou is when the new one will go in.. i got 89thou on mine now...still strong...
lol, good luck on that one... you might consider the swap at 200k or even 250k... I did a comp test on mine and it was 155-165 psi on all cylinders, even at 160k, it's still a strong running motor with NO ridge on the cylinders... [sm=icon_rock.gif]
180 degree thermostat will stop that ping.......and I rebuilt my 360 after 192,000 miles because of burning oil. The rings were just fatiqued. It looked fine besides that, but the main bearings were starting to show signs of wear. A compression check won't show that so beware. You can get a rebuild kit for about a grand without the cam, but since its a roller cam it'll probably mic out fine too.

summer time im gonna do a comp test and see where im sitting with my bangers.... hopefully theyll be close to wher your at... it feels tight still.. i let off the gas and the compression of the motor will slow the truck down nicely..ive driven cars and trucks before with really poor compression and when you let off the gas the thing still went cruising along...
