Question Transmission problems

1997 2500 4x4 5.9L. I'm having problems when I stop at a stop sign or stop light. When it's time to go I gas it and it doesn't go. I gas it a little and then it pops hard and goes. This doesn't happen when I'm on the go only when I stop. I checked the fluid level and it's good. I adjusted the gearshift linkage using Haynes manual but it doesn't seem right. I have a lot of play in the shifter. By just using the play in the shifter I can move the shifter from the Drive indicator to Neutral without shifting gears. At the gearshift linkage and I can see a lot of play there too. So I'm guessing the play is inside the transmission. I was going to adjust the bands but until I get the gearshift linkage right I don't think it would matter. Anybody know how to get rid of that play in the linkage?

Replace the bushings on the shift linkage. I think they have them available at most any parts store. THEN adjust the shifter. See if your problem is still present. (probably will be.....)

I replaced the bushings and the play is gone, then made the adjustment on the shifter. I changed the filter and fluid and added the Lucas Transmission Fix additive. Readjusted the Rear and Front Bands. The slippage is not as bad but it's still there. At least it doesn't slam into gear and it seems to pop it gear quicker with a little tap on the gas. I guess the next step is to replace the pressure solenoid, sensor, governor. All the parts I can get to without dropping the valve body. When I drained the fluid it looked OK so I am hopeful.

If you're going to do all that why not just drop the valve body and throw in a Jr shift kit?
