Could be a couple things......

First suspect would be the TCC solenoid. (torque converter clutch.) If it is staying engaged, it would be like putting a manual trans into gear, and just dumping the clutch.

Another prospect would be the crank position sensor on it's way out. Given your symptoms, I would suspect the tcc solenoid first.
